The nearest airport is Auckland which is a 40 minute drive,
there are shuttle buses that run to the ferry terminals and the
airport and also the Devonport ferry which is 15 minutes from the main ferry port terminal.
If catching public transport the walk to the ferry from the last drop off at Devonport,
the beach is also within walking distance from the ferry port and bus terminals.
As the northern shore is only a few minutes away it still might pay to hire a car
from car hire Auckland
during your stay, allowing travelling to go further and into the heart of the southern Island and visit some of the beaches famed for surfing.

Devonport hosts the Wine and Food festival every February, displaying the new wines produced from the local vineyards. Explore the many attractions Devonport has to offer within a 15 min walk you can visit the North Head for views and tunnels. Mt Victoria and Cambria reserve.
A Navy museum, tennis court, Waitemata Golf Course, Devonport Heritage walk all within 5 minutes of each other. Walk along the coast from Devonport Ferry terminal on Cheltenham beach and the north coves to Milford beach or Long Bay coastal walkway

Visit Puhoi colonial village, kayak the river and thermal swim/slides at Waiwera on the way back. Tauwharanui Regional park a popular and favourite white sand surf beach, go for picnic or fish, walk, swim, surf, lots of native birds and farm animals.
